8 Days ‘Til Christmas : Advent

17 Dec

When I was a little kid, the one thing that I really enjoyed was my Advent calendar.  Each day, I would open a little door and there would be a piece of chocolate or candy, along with some words of wisdom (usually a Bible verse, as Advent Calender are traditionally a religious affair.)

Maybe I'll make this for John next December?

But you don’t have to be Christian to enjoy an Advent calendar.  I’ve seen so many cool ideas, and one of my goals for 2012 is to make at least one of these.

  • Just Something I Made has a really great idea for an Advent calendar using wooden thread spools.  These little kits are easy to make, and you can even assemble them and pass them out as gifts so that others can fill in their own special messages for their friends and family.
  • Knit Picks has a fantastic garland-style Advent calendar, in which you knit your scraps to make mittens.  I think that this one is so cute, and it is,by far, my favorite idea that I’ve seen.
  • And for those of you who are Sci-Fi nuts, what holiday season is complete without the Dalek Advent calendar?  A fun idea, and you could use it to count down to the Doctor Who Christmas Episode.

However you celebrate, and however you count-down, I hope that you are enjoying the month and taking time to relax and unwind, amid all the Christmas chaos.

I’m starting the Knit Picks version NOW, so I have it for next year. I loved my Advent Calendar too and wish I knew where it went. Dad’s secretary sewed a felt cut-out of a tree on a … linen? muslin? wall hanging and then made 25 mini ornaments for me to hang, one per day, obviously… The pockets to hold the ornaments were big enough for a little piece of candy or a trinket to be tucked in for each day too.

Thanks for sharing. I’ve really, REALLY enjoyed your pre-Christmas posts. Thank you for helping me re-focus and hold onto my Christmas spirit this year.
