4 Days ‘Til Christmas : Get It Together

One of my favorite holiday traditions is having two or three gatherings at my house.  I love to cook and bake, and I am more than happy to do it for my nearest and dearest.  To fill the house with the sweet smells of ham, candied sweet potatoes, while listening to my friends and family laugh and make merry … it really is one of the best gifts that I could receive for Christmas.

That's me, last year, cooking Christmas dinner for friends

One thing that I always look forward to is the fact that my ‘sister’, Emy, always comes home for Christmas.  She’s not going to be able to this year, since she was here in the autumn (she lives in the UK now.)  But that’s okay – I guess her man, Matt, does deserve to spend at least one Christmas with her. ;-)

So, this year, I have off from work and I plan on making the most of this rarity.  Christmas Eve dinner at the In-laws, with roast beef and hearty goodies, Christmas morning breakfast with my family, and a Christmas night/Doctor Who party with a few close friends.  I can’t wait!

What are your plan for Christmas this year?

8 Days ‘Til Christmas : Advent

When I was a little kid, the one thing that I really enjoyed was my Advent calendar.  Each day, I would open a little door and there would be a piece of chocolate or candy, along with some words of wisdom (usually a Bible verse, as Advent Calender are traditionally a religious affair.)

Maybe I'll make this for John next December?

But you don’t have to be Christian to enjoy an Advent calendar.  I’ve seen so many cool ideas, and one of my goals for 2012 is to make at least one of these.

  • Just Something I Made has a really great idea for an Advent calendar using wooden thread spools.  These little kits are easy to make, and you can even assemble them and pass them out as gifts so that others can fill in their own special messages for their friends and family.
  • Knit Picks has a fantastic garland-style Advent calendar, in which you knit your scraps to make mittens.  I think that this one is so cute, and it is,by far, my favorite idea that I’ve seen.
  • And for those of you who are Sci-Fi nuts, what holiday season is complete without the Dalek Advent calendar?  A fun idea, and you could use it to count down to the Doctor Who Christmas Episode.

However you celebrate, and however you count-down, I hope that you are enjoying the month and taking time to relax and unwind, amid all the Christmas chaos.

9 Days ‘Til Christmas : The True Meaning Of It All

I blogged earlier in the month about giving back, and doing something for those who have less, this holiday season.  I have to say that I am overwhelmed and amazed with some of the stories that I am hearing from friends and family this year.  It seems that, the more the economy falls into the crapper, the more people are stepping up and really doing what they can to help those who can’t help themselves, especially people with kids.  Because NO child should go without at Christmas, especially if they still believe in Santa.

And you know Santa is real, right?  Santa means hope; hope for a better tomorrow, hope that someone, somewhere loves us, hope that everything will be okay, if just for one day of the year, for one small moment of a morning.

There are two stories that I’ve read that have really touched my heart.  And beware, you will cry.  I know that I did.

  • THIS MAN has been handing out $100 bills to strangers in Reading, Pa – one of the most impoverished areas of the country, with one of the highest unemployment rates.

These are just two of the stories, of the many strangers out there that go out of their way to brighten someone’s holiday.  I wanted to share them with you, because to me, in an age where we see so much violence and hate, it is heart-warming to see that there is still good in the world.

11 Days ‘Til Christmas : High Tech

Today, this post at the Menagerie is brought to you via mobile coolness!

I finally had a chance to upgrade my cell phone! I am now the happy owner of an iPhone. Not the 4s; just the regular version from last year. So far, I am having fun, downloading apps and learning how to use it. This is so much better than the “crack berry”.

More Christmas blogging to come tomorrow!

15 Days ‘Till Christmas : Dress Up!

I love to dress up for Christmas.  Holiday parties – with friends, family, or co-workers – are the perfect occasions to glam it up a bit and channel your inner Drag Queen.  The pink dress that I featured the other day is going to be my go-to outfit this season, but I thought that I would share a couple other cute dresses that have caught my eye.

'Go For Brocade' from Modcloth.com

I can’t get enough of the fashion mecca that is Modcloth.  They have cute dresses, vintage inspired clothing, and awesome accessories.  When I hit my goal weight, I am buying a dress from them.  It must happen.

Vintage dress from 'Old Faithful Vintage'

I saw this dress when I was browsing Etsy the other morning.  Old Faithful Vintage is a shop full of cute dresses from the 1950′s.  I love the details on the bodice of this dress, and the color is perfect for Christmas.

Nothing says a party like sequence

While it screams ’1988′ to me, I really like this dress from ThreadSence.  I’m nuts for anything that sparkles, especially around the holidays.  If I wore this, I’d have to pair it with a pair of colorful tights (blue or purple) and a very high pair of heels.

What about you?  Do you have any plans to dress up for the holidays, or are you keeping it low-key?

16 Days ‘Till Christmas : Fit To Print

One of my great loves in life is for all things vintage, especially from the 1940′s and 1950′s.  The clothes, the music, the general over-all style of the era. I just can’t get enough.  And seeing as it is Christmas time, I thought I would share a few of my favorite vintage Christmas ads.  Some of these would be crazy to see today, but they are still fun.

And you thought he wanted cookies and milk!

Beer - the perfect holiday gift!

It isn't a Christmas bulb unless it is a C9 bulb!

That's right - you need to get yourself a little something, too.

17 Days ‘Till Christmas : Here We Come ‘A Wassailing

A vintage Christmas ad

I can’t carry a tune in a bucket (okay, I’m not that bad, but I won’t be making any solo performances anytime soon,) but I love to sing Christmas songs.  I’m sure I look like a crazy person when driving in my car, tapping on the steering wheel, and singing at the top of my lungs.  But ’tis the season to be merry, and I plan on doing my share.

So, if you are crazy like me, and sing at the top of your lungs – in the car or with others – take a listen at some of my favorite Christmas songs.

‘God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen’, as sung by the Barenaked Ladies.  My all time favorite Christmas song.

‘One Little Christmas Tree‘ by Stevie Wonder.  I always cry, I can’t help it.  I love this song.

‘I Saw Three Ships‘.  I prefer a more traditional version, but Sting does a pretty good job.

‘The Holly and The Ivy’.  I remember hearing this one as a child and being captivated.  There is something about it that I just love.

‘Christmas Wrapping’.  Oi, I can rock this one out.  And I do (while old ladies stare and children point, zooming by in their cars.)

What are you favorite holiday tunes?

19 Days ‘Till Christmas : Buy Handmade

Oh, to go holiday shopping.  To brave the crowds and angry masses, searching for that perfect gift.  Waiting in line, hoping that you won’t have to run to yet another store to make your purchase.  Fighting with little old ladies and catty mothers to get that toy or new gadget that is on everyone’s list, only to find that, once again, no one seems to have it in stock.

Why would you stoop to such madness as this when you can buy handmade?

I know so many folks who are hand crafters, who have their own small businesses.  Just look to the right under ‘Buy Handmade‘.  You’re find amazing yarn for the knitter in your life, roving for the spinner, and bags for knitters and non-knitters a like.  Not to mention the amazing and wonderful world that is Etsy.

You honestly can find someone for everyone on Etsy.  Case in point : I have a wonderful friend, who is just like a sister to me.  I’ve known Emy since I was eight years old.  So, in reality, that is a lot of Christmas gifts over the years, and I’m always striving to find something new and different for her.  I usually always turn to Etsy when shopping for her, if I’m not knitting her something.  And my mother exclaimed to me the other day how she found the perfect gift for my aunt on Etsy as well.

Here are a few of my favorite Etsy shops (other than those listed over there on my sidebar.) :

Gomegan Designs :  Her jewelry is simple and fresh.  I own one of her pieces – a simple silver necklace with a sparrow charm.

Poppycock Vintage :  Vintage hats and bags!  This is a shop that I drool over on a frequent basis.  The owner is also super friendly and the customer service is warm and welcome.

The Black Apple : There is something about her art that I really love.  It reminds me of fairy tale story books mixed with the old carnival freak shows.  It has a mythical yet vintage feel to it, along with a certain degree of innocence.

Zephyr’s Art : A few years ago (it was either my birthday or Christmas,) my husband purchased a set of wine glasses for me that had etched designs of Frida Kahlo ( my favorite artist) on them.  Then I, in turn, purchased a set of wine glasses for my MIL from the same shop the following year.  This woman is talented; her glass work is lovely and sturdy, and she is very friendly to boot!

Haunted Fox Jewelry : Rachael is a personal friend and I can attest to the love and creativity that she puts into her projects.  Not only is she a fantastic person, but she really cares about the crafting that she does.

There are a lot of options; the shops listed on my blog are just the tip of the iceberg.  I hope that, when you are searching for the perfect gift this year, that you will consider hand-made and vintage as an alternative to the mall and major retailers.  Whether you shop online or locally, there are so many options and great artisans out there, just waiting to be discovered.

20 Days ‘Till Christmas : Pass The Popcorn

'Snow' from 'White Christmas'

One of my favorite things about Christmas is all of the holiday movies!!!  I have several that are my personal favorites.

  1. The Christmas Carol.  There are so many versions, but my favorite is the one with Patrick Stewart.  There is a scene where he walks around the world with the Ghost of Christmas Present, and they visit coal miner’s in West Virginia, a group of French sailors, and others all singing ‘Silent Night’.
  2. Scrooged.  Okay, a version of the Christmas Carol, but it is a Christmas movie and it has Bill Murray in it.  Enough said.
  3. Holiday Inn.  This was actually the movie where the song ‘White Christmas’ came from.  There are amazing songs, fabulous dance numbers – all the classic Hollywood follies.
  4. White Christmas.  I’ve had a crush on Danny Kaye since I was a kid, and this is my far one of my favorites with him.  And Rosemary Clooney …. she is my style guru!
  5. Home Alone I and II.  When I was a kid, I always thought it would be fun to do what Kevin does in these movies.  I also remember going to see the first one in the theater with my Dad.
  6. RENT.  Okay, not a holiday movie, per say, but set at Christmas.  I can still sing along and I know all of the words.  And there’s a drag queen dressed in a sexy santa outfit!!!!
  7. Love Actually.  I can’t get enough of this one!  Sweet, sappy, and Liam Neeson.  Yum.
  8. The Santa Clause II.  There is this scene where Santa is at the Principal’s Christmas party and hands out all of these antique toys.  I cry every time!
  9. A Christmas Story.  No holiday is complete without this movie!   I could watch it over and over (and I usually do, on Christmas Eve.)
  10. The Yule Log.  It is simply a loop of a log on a fire, but put that on a flat screen, play some Christmas music on the IPod, and you have a holiday setting that can’t be beat!

My Yearly Descent Into Madness

November is only four days away.  This means that once again, I will be throwing caution to the wind, living on caffeine and nicotine, and following the motto, “You can sleep when you’re dead”.

That’s right, folks.  It’s almost time for NaNoWriMo !!!!

The first year I participated, I was scared out of my mind.  50,000 words in 30 days … who can do that? And then, when the time came (in the final days of November), to submit my story to the official word count reader, I could have cried.  I had passed the 50K mark for almost a thousand words.  Today, two years later, my first novel is edited, polished, and ready to find a literary agent.

Last year’s novel was meant to be a prequel to the first, but didn’t quite turn out that way.  I’ve neglected her, sadly, in the last year while trying to whip my first novel into shape.  I feel bad for Novel #2; I’ve treated her like the neglected step-child, or a rebound relationship.  I promise you, Novel #2, when November is over, we’ll see each other more. I’ll finally try to work out your kinks and plot issues.  You mean a lot to me, and I don’t want you to think that I forgot about you.

Which brings us to my new novel.  This year will have a heavy helping of time travel, death, sex.  John Wilkes Booth, OCD NASA employees, and a spinning wheel thrown in for good measure.  New inspiration and new Muses; you just never know who will make their way in as inspiration, and live on in my novel.

If you have been lurking, thinking, and pondering if you could really participate in NaNoWriMo, my answer to you is YES! What are you waiting for?  It is a month full of literary abandon.  Of throwing structure and caution to the wind and finally getting that idea our of you head and onto paper!

Give it a try!  I promise, you won’t be sorry.
